Salvation Army launches winter outreach – Winter cold brings need for blankets and food

FRIDAY, 21 MAY 2021 I For immediate release

As winter spreads its freezing tentacles across Southern Africa, The Salvation Army will this weekend launch its winter blanket and food outreach to the homeless of the city.

Sunday 23 May at 16h00 will see officers handing out blankets and a plate of hot food from the basement of the Church’s national head office in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. *

Captain Velani Buthelezi, PR Secretary of The Salvation Army, Southern Africa Territory, says: “This winter is likely to be a very cold one for our homeless communities. We are also seeing many more people living on the streets because of job losses during Covid.

“Our food and blanket outreach for many street people can be the difference between life and death. Sunday’s outreach is a result of a very generous donation of 600 blankets from a concerned person and her friends, as well as a R5000 donation from Pick n Pay. We are so grateful for this support,” he said.

Captain Buthelezi noted that the winter will be a long one and many more meals will need to be provided for the homeless. He appealed for both monetary and in-kind donations.

Monetary donations can be made through the Salvation Army’s GivenGain donations platform at https://www.givengain.com/cc/TSAHelp/. “This is a very secure way to make monetary contributions to our cause,” he added.

Alternatively, members of the public can deposit via EFT or deposit directly into The Salvation Army’s bank account. Details are:
