Thank you for keeping our elderly safe and warm this winter

We asked, and you gave – to ensure that our elderly weren’t overlooked this winter.

Thank you!

To thank you, please share this virtual visit to three of our care homes for the aged where your kindness is at work.

In Mofolo, a mostly run down but bustling suburb in the heart of Soweto, Ephraim Zulu is a clean, bright and welcoming oasis and home to 70 senior citizens.

You’re likely to be greeted by Sipho Kunene, the Administration Assistant, one of the home’s faces of kindness and care.

There are three blocks: Frail Care; Semi-Frail Care for residents who need bathing and dressing; and Independents, where residents can look after themselves.

At the heart of the home is the kitchen where two friendly cooks prepare the varied nourishing daily meals.

And outside, a well-kept garden contributes to the kitchen’s need for fresh vegetables.

Last stop is the laundry, where work never stops for the four ladies in charge.  With only one industrial washing machine and one drier still working, it’s a daily struggle to cope with the load that comes from 70 residents, especially with blankets in winter.  But the ladies count their blessings.

We move on to Eventide Home in the quiet suburb of Emmarentia.

This home is a beacon of hope for elderly men and women from every walk of life and has a warm family atmosphere.

Winnie Phiri, the warm and exuberant Assistant Manager, enjoys caring for the 29 residents, and fondly refers to them as her grandparents.

Eventide is designed for independent living and has both shared and single rooms which are sunny and bright.

Three meals each day are provided together with cleaning of rooms and laundry.  A volunteer Sister visits once a week, and a social worker visits twice a month.

There’s a well-stocked library, and activities like daily devotions, Bingo, shopping, Bible study and Sunday service keep residents busy.  There’s also free transport to a doctor or hospital when needed.

The elderly folk here feel cherished and very fortunate.

Last stop is Thembela in Durban.  Thembela is an independent living home for residents aged 60+ who can contribute to their accommodation and needs.

Getting old is never easy.  Thembela is a sanctuary where the elderly feel welcomed, respected, loved and safe.

Thank you so much for your support which allows these havens of hope to keep their doors open to elderly people in need.
