Fires flare and set sensitive areas ablaze
Around midnight, fire broke out in the Kwa Mai Mai informal settlement in downtown Johannesburg on Sunday, June 12, killing one person and leaving many injured, and hundreds of residents homeless. The cause of the blaze is unclear. Within hours more than 400 shacks were burnt to the ground. Victims watched helplessly as the fire destroyed their precious homes, some desperately trying to save a few of their possessions. Residents were devastated as everything they had worked so hard for was no more after the fire ripped through their shacks.
The Salvation Army responded quickly with food, clothes, and blankets for over 200 people. We continue to bring a ray of hope through our emergency relief programmes. May God continue to comfort and bless all the affected and displaced people of the Kwa Mai Mai community.
