Greet Easter at sunrise service

The Salvation Army will this year once again host Cape Town’s interdenominational Easter sunrise service at Rhodes Memorial, continuing a tradition that began in the 1940s.

The service, which is attended by up to one thousand people, will start at 06h15 with preliminary music on Sunday 1st April 2018 on the steps of Rhodes Memorial, Rondebosch.

As the sun crests over the Hottentots Holland mountains, they will join in song with Salvation Army bands from all over the peninsula to greet Easter morning in a 76-year old tradition – the first sunrise service was held in 1942.

Capetonians planning to attend the service have been reminded that no parking will be allowed at the Rhodes Memorial itself. Instead, parking is at the southern entrance parking areas (Exit 7 off M3) of the University of Cape Town’s upper campus.

Shuttles will run from 05h00 to Rhodes Memorial and back to the university. There is no charge for the shuttle service, and no booking is required. The shuttles will return to the campus once the service is ended.

Although the event is hosted by The Salvation Army, people of all denominations are invited to attend the memorable and moving occasion.

People are advised to dress up warmly and bring blankets and cushions to sit on. Many attendees also bring flasks of coffee and hot cross buns with them.
